How to Build an Email List (and it Why is Vital)

An email list is a collection of email addresses of people who have actively agreed to receive emails from you. Building such a list is the process of gathering emails from various sources and saving them for future marketing campaigns. Obviously it goes deeper than this, but that is it in a nutshell.

Why is it so important?

Having a large email list of people who are interested in your services, niche, brand or products is a very, very powerful marketing technique. You can re-sell to the same people again and again and again! It does not rely on buying traffic and it does not rely on your having Google rankings. And unlike a social media following it is totally in your control (you don’t have to follow the rules companies like Facebook enforce to try and encourage you to buy traffic).

What is the best way of doing it?

This is a vast topic and one that is way too large to fully cover in any single little blog post! However there are some golden rules that you can follow that will help you get on your way.

Use a third party provider – We recommend using a service like mail chimp. Services like this are cheap, they have good deliverability rates and tons of useful feature for list management and email functionality.

Offer value in return for the sign-ups – When you are asking for people to sign-up to your email newsletter make sure you offer value in return for them doing so. You can offer advice, discounts, freebies, competition entries, anything along those lines. Just something that makes the person think it is worthwhile giving you their contact details.

Deliver on that value offer – Make sure that you start to offer value very quickly. The sooner the better. Even if you start with something small and fun like a funny pic or a good joke. Your goal here is to prove you are trustworthy by keeping your end of the deal and to get them trained to look forward to receiving your emails.

Study copy writing – Again this is a huge subject but it is something you really need to dive into. Copy writing is the art of using the written word to get people to buy things. It is a very valuable skill and one you should most certainly add to your arsenal.

Sell gently and infrequently – If you hammer your list with sales emails you will very soon notice that people are either unsubscribing a lot or even worse marking your emails as junk! You must avoid this like the plague. Instead you should be gently selling to your list while continually offering them value. If you get this right they will not even feel like they are being sold anything!

Treat your list very well – As you build your list you need to remember how valuable it really is. It can make you a lot of money with very little work for many months and years. So what you need to do it treat it with lots of love, care and attention. Never make short-term decisions with what is a powerful long-term sales and marketing tool.
